Title: Operations Support Engineer
Reporting to the Vice President of Operations and based in Fairfield
County, CT, the Operations Support
Engineer will have a key role in overseeing the organization, configuration
and planning of
this company's production and non-production systems. Working with a small
team in the US and the
UK, the primary responsibility will be to provide support to ensuring
optimal operation of
servers, spanning a number of data-centres by developing a detailed
knowledge of the system
infrastructure. In addition, a more general support to the first-line
operations team will be an
implicit part of the role, which will require occasional work within the
24x7 shift team during
periods of absence from that team.
Key areas of responsibility
1. System and project support
o Providing systems support to the operations team for production and
nonproduction
infrastructure, including OS builds, standard software installations,
custom software installations, network installations and configuration,
etc.
Support tasks are varied and determined by the VP of Operations. A strong
sense of operational delivery is required to ensure focus and completion of
activities on a timely basis.
o Understanding the basic architecture of this company's applications to
provide
problem identification and support.
o Completing operations projects
o Providing general systems support, including application deployment,
configuration, infrastructure management, data-centre configuration and
other
related tasks in support of the core operations team
2. General technical support
o General support to the staff team, including PCs, laptops, networks,
printers, etc. This kind of support is occasional and is shared between all
members of the operations team.
o Provide fill-in support to the 24/7 shift team during periods of staff
outage in that
team. This necessitates familiarization with company's monitoring systems,
helpdesk system and will require customer contact when acting in this role.
Skills:
Primary skills
· Strong Linux systems experience in configuration and administration
· Good understanding of systems security, networks, access-control and
processes
· Database experience (MySQL, MaxDB, Oracle, etc.) from an administrative
viewpoint
· Windows systems configuration (Win2k and/or Win2003-Srv)
· Familiarity with operations and data-centre configuration and support
· Excellent team-player & communications and a pro-active, problem-solver
mentality
· Customer-facing communication skills and excellent written communication
for writing
reports and documentation
Secondary skills
· Microsoft Exchange administration
· Network systems (Cisco firewalls, routers, switches, etc.)
· Familiarity with CTI (Computer Telephony Interface) systems, ISDN and
voice-systems
