Hi Edward,
This is a tricky question, and the current economic situation doesn't help.
First and foremost, you get what you pay for - in most cases. Programmers
working at a rate of $20/hour could not be considered professional. Sure
their code will (might) work, but is it optimized? Is it secure? Will it
work under high loads?
I have consulted companies, where 'cheap' programmers where hired to do the
job. After one hour of looking at the code, I found countless security flaws
and no optimization what so ever. When you ask why there is only one
function in the whole application and the answer is: "Well, I only found out
last week that there are functions in PHP", you can fully understand where
the $20/hour comes from.
It's true that we all need to start somewhere, and that's where you'll find
those guys. The fact that companies are hiring them to build major
applications is wrong, but in most cases, they either find this out later on
in life, or their application never gets launched, so the faults are never
found.
What can we do about it? Try to explain this to the hiring company.
Sometimes it work!
