 From what I understand, the whole page needs to be parsed into the 
equivalent of php statements. If I'm correct, this:

<td><a href="index.php?page=<?= $_GET['page'] ?>&sort=id">ID</a></td>

needs to be interpreted into something like this:

echo('<td><a href="index.php?page=');
echo($_GET['page']);
echo('&sort=id">ID</a></td>');

so there isn't really any "going in and out" of php.
