For what it's worth I did decide to go ahead with the source install...

But I (doh!) didn't uninstall the existing rpms first.  Oops.  Most 
everything works fine still.  Except pear. Except select calls through 
phpMyAdmin.  But everything else... so far...

Looks like I have something do keep me busy for another Saturday afternoon.
