Or take a look at how a package like mailman, which is really meant to
reside in a single directory, is spread all over the system:

I understand the logic behind the decisions about where to put stuff -- the
use of /var/lib versus /usr/lib, etc. But as a personal preference I would
rather it was simpler. It's not like I have /usr and /var on separate
partitions, disk space is abundant, even on SSDs.
